Chuck, your problem is probably the isolation diodes in your alternator.
On the SEV/Motorola alternator they are on a plate bolted to the back
of the alternator with insulating washers. They are NEGATIVE diodes and
can be fairly easily replaced but the insulating washers HAVE to be good
or the diodes are shorted across and can't work.
