Before digging in... 700 1990

... you will get some nice visual clues and tips from Art Benstein's Photo Essay on the pump replacement job.

I also replaced my '93 940 pump just after Art did — and I didn't really enjoy the experience (crammed in the trunk and breathing fumes). It might have been better had I worked outdoors, but weather said no. BTW, I was 75 when did mine, if that's any encouragement.

Also be sure to see the "additional discussion" in Andy's link (above).

999 5448 is some kind of special tool. Probably not essential.

But you will have to solder the leads to the new pump (check polarity or
the pumper might turn into a sucker).
