Just out of curiosity, did the 544 came with a relay like the newer Volvos? Or, are you referring to the flasher unit? Seems if the flasher unit was bad, the lights would remain steady and not flash at all. What I'd do to eliminate the flasher/relay as the faulty unit, is position the turn signal left or right and reach under the dash and hold the flasher unit in the palm of your hand, you should be able to feel it clicking. It's really an easy way to test the flasher unit.
