As far as I know there are no differences between autos and standards, except for the 93 standards having LH 3.0 instead of 2.4. Both of my cars are 2.4 and I have swapped control units(to diagnose another problem) and the 89 is faster with either ECU. Not sure about camshafts, but I thought Volvo used the same camshaft on all the later 240s.
I am thinking it may be the fact that the 89 has turbo sway bars, bilstien shocks, and the small turbo steering wheel. The 93 is all stock with the "school bus size" airbag steering wheel. I can't believe how much difference these small modifications make to a 240.
I wish I could loose the 93 steering wheel. Sometimes I think I have driven for over 20 years without an airbag, so why do I need one now. But if I ever took it off and my wife got in an accident with the car..
