Andy,

I figured as much with respect to explosion hazard. Thanks for pointing out the fuel vapor combustion parameters. I did remove the rubber hose that connects the end of the filler neck to the tank. It wasn't difficult and made a lot more room.I have a wagon, so it may have been easier than in the trunk of a sedan. The new pump is a lot louder than the old one was. I guess I shouldn't complain since the old one wasn't making any noise at all there at the end.
