So you may just have the wrong brackets - there is a German mail order company with a downloadable catalogue showing all this type of thing for 240's, but I can't recall their name - something like B&W - if they have 740 parts it should all be clear. Can you get access to a Haynes manual or similar with this in?

Also there are suppliers in the USA of aftermarket headlamp conversion parts, you might find diagrams there. It's likely the bracket is what's stopping you seeing how it slots together.

Also another thought - have you taken out a headlamp and looked at the mounting in the car - it may be you have the mountings for the motors already there, and the metal brackets they came with are not needed.
