Jiffy Lube stuff! ....

I've heard that some outfits like JiffyLube (not sure it they're actually the ones, or some other outfit like them), to save time, just toss the original screw-on plugs and insert these.

Legend (myth? true? I don't know) is that they're often getting sued for having stripped the original threads (cross-threading or overtorquing) and having to pay for new oil pans (often big costs) and so adopted these plugs instead -- you can't damage threads if you don't screw any plug back in. Of course, this compels the user to come back to them for the next oil change, but then, anyone who uses them even once deserves this for having sold their soul to the devil. And I don't know how trustworthy these plugs are, anyway. They would sure scare me!

So, again, I can't say how much of any of this is true -- I've never had any personal experience with these kinds of outfits, but I've read a lot of sob stories like this at other places, particularly M-B owner websites.
