As you know, the 444 speedometer connection is not compatible with an M40 transmission cable. You could install a relatively cheap GPS and use the readout for your more accurate speed. I have a Timex GPS watch and use this sometimes, although the battery life on the receiver is short. You could also install a tachometer and use the engine speed at various gears to know your speed. I do this on my Amazon-S that has a kph speedometer that does not properly register the speed - 3100 rpm is around 80 kph in 4th, but this is a B16B motor.
