checking fuel pressure 700

I believe that's the return line to the tank, and if I'm right, it should show very little pressure if any. It's just a line that pretty much "spills" excess fuel back into the tank - I don't think there should be any restriction to that flow, hence little pressure there.

If the idle is "nice and smooth and the car starts easily" I would bet the compression is OK. Save that test for later.

Timing is a good thing to check. So also is a clogged fuel FILTER. It's very puzzling how a line would get clogged, as there are two filters, and the one downstream of the pump will catch very tiny particles. I've pulled apart a few fuel systems at the yard on high-mileage Volvos and they have all been squeaky clean.
