i tried this method a few months back. do not simply drop it in...it can get into bad places. I drilled a tiny hole in my dipstick and used thin wire to wire a magnet to the dipstick. the magnet i got has a hole in it too which made it easier. I noticed a small amount of material stuck to the magnet...mostly very very fine particulate, but nothing serious...and my pump is original with 355,000 miles on it...aside from the leaks i doubt the fluid has ever been changed.
