Is it a generator or an alternator? Alternators are aluminum, big around
and short with terminals on the back. Generators are steel, painted black,
not very big around (about the size/shape of the starter) and have the
terminals on the OD.
Generators are mounted on a bracket bolted to the block with 3 rubber-mounted
bolts.
Alternators are mounted by one big bolt to an ear that sticks off the side of
the block. Both have a tensioner fastened to the head that attaches to a bolt
on the top.
