Personally I am just amazed that it is not a hydraulic assembly. Putting it back together is pretty straight forward, stuff it through the firewall to the pedal assembly and attach it, run it down to the trans and stuff it through the round piece on the bottom corner of the trans, hook it all up at the arm with that big metal piece, the rubber block, and the washer, adjust it all up and it should be good to go. As far as what could cause that sucker to snap? I don't know, something could've taken a crap in the clutch itself like the pressure plate (spring popped out and is stuck between the throw out and the fingers on the plate), or the throw out bearing could be crocked and stuck on the input shaft housing. I personally have seen both of those combinations with a broken cable.
