Any 2 terminal (one in,one out)item in series to the radio has to be either a resistor or an inductor. A very low value resistor gets used to limit in rush current and an inductor is used to limit noise. Another reason is the PO could have put an LED in the radio illumination instead of a bulb, and needed a resistor to limit the current to the LED. Check across the thing with an ohmmeter set on the higher scale and see if it is really open, if you bypass it and there really is an LED, the LED will fuse open.
