89 740 no start cold 700 1989

I' don't think that it is water in the fuel. After it starts it runs too good for that. In the past day we drove about 50 miles and it ran perfectly. I did check the filter box for moisture. No sign that there was any water there. Also I realize that the coolant temp sensor that I checked was for the gage not the ECU ( thanks FAQ !) It's not cold starting any better and I'm still confused. The ether treatment in the cold is a pain.
