Are automatic 240s faster than manuals

Today after many days I saw a 240 wagon (just like mine ) and it so happened that this guy was already standing at the traffic light at the top of queue and then I came and stopped next to him. It seems that other guy also sensed this rare occurrence as, as soon as light turned green he accelerated with such alacrity that he took a lead of 60-70 meter within matter of seconds .I am still thinking that why I did not give him any fight .

I have already listed down 4-5 reasons.Top most can be :"my thought that public roads are not meant for such behaviour" It was a 35MPH zone.Others are lack of smoke in last 3 hours ,presence of my family and sumptous lunch ...and may be automatics are faster than manuals(assuming he was driving an automatic) ( Esp mine as it has quite notchy gear box and U really can not rush through)

Is the last reason really true ( Automatic diff is definately more aggressive, Manual first gear is way down ) Although I know for some other car model a manual can be faster ,depends how fast you can change and at what time.

Sorry to bother you guys but had I fought I would have slept in peace today ;-)

Regards
