Looks like a sensor connector.
I believe a 1986 is not going to have a check engine
light, but if it did it would probably be on.
Looks like it may be the temperature sender connector.
Look underneath the intake manifold towards the front
of the motor for a sensor that is disconnected.
For that matter look around for any disconnected
sensors in the vincinity of that wire.
Is the car running rough/rich? Bad mileage?
looking at the picture again, the way that wire is
curved near the firewall I am going to guess that
it lives somewhere under the intake manifold.
