Balky auto transmission '89 240

Hi,

The weather has been really cold here in upstate NY, and the auto tranny on my '89 240 has been balking while the engine is cold. Is this something that's likely to improve when the weather warms, or should I be looking to replace the transmission (or, more likely, replace the car)?
