rwreagan is correct, the Service reminder light is easily turned off.
It is designed to come on 10,000 miles after it was previously turned off. That is designed to remind you that the service interval has been exceeded.
Pages 8:4 and 8:5 or your Onwer's Manual have a schedule of things to be Adjusted, Replaced, Inspected (and Corrected or replaced as needed) or Lubricated at each interval. When I have done those things, I turn off the Service reminder.
The pages alwo recommend a weekly check of 13 different items.
If you did not get an Owner's Manual with your car, do yourself a favor and get one. Visit www.voltotechinfo.com or call 1-800-25-VOLVO to buy the printed book.
Or go to http://www.volvojimfisher.com/pages/owners/manuals/models/1997_960/1997960Contents.htm
and see if you can download one.
Good Luck,
Bob
