As David replied, your first test was conclusive if performed as you stated. Perhaps your wiring or contact was faulty when you made your connections directly to the pump, but more likely, the brushes are intermittent inside the old pump and it only seems to run when properly jostled. You can't depend on a pump that needs proper jostling, so you concluded correctly a replacement was needed. (Based on your test and statement anyway.)
