have you checked if the fuel pumps come on while cranking ?
the hall sensor tells the computer to run the fuel pumps so if the pumps run its not the hall sensor.

and yes you can get just the sensor and install it on the distributor plate
fcp groton sells them but drilling out the rivets is really a precission job. but if you use a drillpress it should be alright.
