Not sure about the link in the archives, but here is the link to the datasheet that most folks use for this job. It is an LM3914 from National: http://www.national.com/pf/LM/LM3914.html

The datasheet/app notes give more than enough information to build your own. If you review it and have questions, email me, I'll help out where I can. NOTE: Soldering and wiring required!
