Not knowing what year your project car is, this may be off the wall -
The B230FT is a slant-block 4, as I recall. The 6304 is a straight up block. The tranny may not bolt up.
I have a 1997 965, with the AW-40 tranny and a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio. The tranny has electronic controlled shift points, select for Winter, Economy, or Sport modes, and its own computer. Seems that whatever engine is in there, leaving the stock tranny in would be easier that swapping it, too.
Why not pull the head and see the condition of the pistons? Then you would know if the 6304 can be re-headed or not.
Good Luck,
Bob

PS: I believe there is a place that re-does 960 heads in Clearwater, FL.
