crank shaft seal question

I have the front of my car torn apart doing a timing belt and seal change but I can not get the elring seal to slip on around the front of the crank. it is like the seal is just a little bit to small. when i try to put it on it pops the spring out and a part of the seal is pushed forward. the seal is well greased what am i doing wrong\ thanks
