Instead of getting a rebuild, you may have just gotten an expensive tightening, which can make the steering very hard.

These people list a rebuild kit for about $206 U.S. I don't know if that's a good price or what's included in the kit:

My guess is that converting your car to power R&P would be quite an undertaking. Probably much easier to just get a new girl friend.
