Sticky gear transmission shifter 200 1983

My 1983 240gl automatic wagon has thrown up a new problem (just changed engine pipe and center bearing). The gear shifter becomes stuck when I try to move it into gear from park and is very hard to get back into park again at end of drive. Needs a lot of jiggling to get it to move. Any ideas?
