correct Thule gutter clips for a 7xx/9xx wagon

My 1991 745 is ripe for a roof rack. I have big plans for this rack, but when I went and bought - rather on impulse - a rack recently off of Craigslist, the thing fits reasonably well, but I had to "pull up" on the tower clamps in order to open the doors. Is this common or do I need to change the clamp that grabs the underside of the gutter? Do others have advice onthis subject? Thanks.
