Since you didn't describe where the sound was coming from, (tranny or speedometer) I'll wager you that your cable snapped 2-3 inches away from the transmission, somewhere in that harsh bend. Get yourself a longer cable (you'll use it when you install the M41), or (preferred) get a right angle drive and in so doing you'll be able to route the cable forward keeping it away from the exhaust pipe and muffler.
