I think we may be overlooking the surge when we shouldn't.
I had this code when my O2 sensor had been dead for a while and needed a new one.

Not to be insulting, but did you check for more than one code? it can store 3 at a time in each connection (2 and 6 I think). Once it shows the first code, you can wait a half second and press the button again to retrieve the next one. Maybe clearing the code would solve the problem.
