Fire your mechanic

Ted,

It's possible for prolonged cranking to fry an old starter, and maybe that is what happened to your's, but I really do not follow your mechanic's logic.

If the car loses electricity completely (none of the accessories work, radio doesn't work, lights don't work), and then comes back to life later, you most definitely have bad grounds somewhere. Remove the battery cables, clean the contacts, and then reconnect the cables. If that doesn't do it, check this out:
