Had exact same problem a few months ago on my '93 945. I cleaned the IAC valve, reinstalled it, then used a wrench to firmly tap on the body of the IAC valve. Since then (knock wood) no problems.

Mechanic friend told me that tapping the IAC valve can sometimes loosen anything that's interfering with proper operation.
