The Volvo was not the first car to use the diagonal band across the radiator. The Martin-Wasp, of which 16 examples were built in Bennington, Vermont, between 1920 and 1925, had exactly this decorative feature, though it was not used on the final car (now located in the museum in Bennington)
Alvarez guitars often have a similar diagonal stripe inlaid at the twelfth fret, with a small diamond shape at the center, which, with the strings passing vertically over it, somewhat resembles a 740 grill.
