960 speedometer-transmissioin

I have a 92 960 and the speedometer most of the time does not work and the shift lights blink between W and E. When the speedometer tries to work as in the needle starts to bounce, the transmission goes into neutral, but then when the needle again drops to zero, it goes back into gear. I replaced the sensor in the rear end
and it made no difference. Sometimes works and sometimes does not.

I have seen the response to get a speedo out of a junk yard, but I hate to do that and maybe find out theat I have the same problem.

Help!
