92 245 in need of another transmission,5 speed 200

it is very difficult going into first,and I suspect I need another transmission. My question is this.Does the year of the 5 speed have anything to do with the quality of the gearbox? were the early years worse than the later? one junk yard has 2 87 240's with 5speed transmissions.How does one tell the tranny is good before it is in the car? or can you? any advice on this topic will be greatly valued. Kris
