I've got absolutely no science to back it up, but I've had similar experiences with weak\overheating\shortcircuiting coils. The issues I dealt with before involved "generic" coils, so I recently put a Flamethrower coil in and have had no problems whatsoever. The Flamethrower instead of a blue Bosch is almost definitely overkill in my stock setup, but I like it anyway.
