I also have a problem with the rear brakes locking up prematurely on my 65 wagon. This car has no proportioning valve; never did from the factory.
T he rear axle and brakes (Wagner?) actually came from my 64 wagon that I parted out, which had drums in the front. The rear brakes would lock prematurely on that car too, so the problem seems to have followed the brakes.
I never observed this problem when the 65 wagon had Girling rear brakes. It does have 195/75 tires in the back, and 165/? in the front (smaller diameter) so I've been wondering if that could be the problem.
I'm going to put new tires on the car soon, and they will all be the same diameter, so I will be curious as to what effect this has on my problem. If that doesn't fix it, then I suppose I will put Girling rear brakes back on the car. I assume they will fit the rear axle of a 64 wagon...
I know I should pay attention to the bore of the Girling wheel cylinders too if I do this, since there seems to be several sizes I could use.
