Ammeters for dynamos and Voltmeters for alternators. Because a dynamo increases it's charging power as revs increase, interpreting what your dynamo is doing is easier with an ammeter than a voltmeter. It's different with an alternator as, if necessary, it will produce full charge from a little above tick over. The voltmeter then monitors the state of your battery and shows how it's coping with the electrical loads.
