In tank pump replacement

The other hose I am talking about is (last time I did this was years ago) a small hose that I remember to be about 2-3 inches long that is attached to the fuel pump which tends to rot out or develop holes so that when the level of gas in the tank gets below 1/2 you start having intermittent power loss from sucking air through the gas line.

Can anyone verify if my recollection of this is correct and can you replace this hose without removing the supply and return lines from the pump. Or do you have to remove the return and supply lines to even get the pump out of the tank?

Thanks
