Personally I don't think your problem sounds like the typical AMM failure but whatever you do DO NOT unplug or plug back in your air mass meter with the car running; doing so could very well fry it.
If the crank position sensor(located at the top of the bellhousing) has a yellow band around the black lead it would be a good investment to replace it as it is approaching 20 years of age.
Have you cleaned the throttle body? It is a very common neglected item that can make a big difference in hot starts and idles. Check the FAQ's at the top right hand drop down menu for instructions. Your throttle body and the 740/940 throttle body are the same and the cleaning procedure is the same.
