Speedometer intermittently working 700

I tried the FAQ, but couldn't find a section on this. I searched and read a few messages and found there is apparently a sending unit in the rear diff. My daughter's 1992 740 wagon had that replaced after a collision this summer, and I'm wondering if that could be it. Anyone that could point a way to the path to fixing this would be appreciated.
