It appears that I'm in need of a ECU (Computer) for my 1990 740.

Why do you think the ECU is bad? They hardly ever fail.

Maybe with more info on symptoms, what's been tried, etc. we might find a cheaper solution. Is this a turbo car (Bosch) or the non turbo (Rex-Regina)?

I see you posted with a Check Engine Light (CEL) on 9/8, but didn't get any response except directions to the FAQ for info on reading diagnostic codes. Did you do that? It's a start.
