The SRS light might or might not be a red herring. The SRS (airbag) light will come on when the car is running if the battery voltage is too low. If this is the case, (assuming this is a 91 240), if possible, drive it to a local parts store and have them check the battery and charging system, or if you have a volt meter, measure the voltage across the battery terminals with the car idling and all lights/radio turned off. If the voltage is above 13V all is good, if it is below 12V, you definitely have a charging/battery problem.
If the battery charging circuit and battery are good, consider cleaning the throttle body and readjusting the idle switch on the throttle body. More importantly, check for stored error codes, see the 740 FAQ on reading error codes, it might provide a hint to the problem.
