do it right&take thethermostat out,you could put in a reverse flush tee&run it for 10 min.Drain it real well&then use a shop vac&blow out all the rest of the crud.If you use any thing caustic you run the chance of causing a leak in the heater core,,,,&I driven around in my bros.544 w no heat &broken window cranks to know that aint so great to do.flus,flushflush.
