You've gotten good advice so I will throw in a picture of the point at which I found the smoothest shifting.Yours will be possibly different. By loosening the two lock nuts on the cable adjusting sleeve, you are moving that sleeve to the left and right to get the right shift. Too tight and you will get that 30 MPH jerk which is bad for your tranny. Brant's suggestion that you check the fluid level is a good one. After a trip to Starbucks, drive the car home and park it on a level spot. Put the shifter in neutral and pull the parking brake on. Then pull the yellow trans dipstick out and look. Look for notes on the dipstick like "hot" and "cold level" (hot is what you are checking) and see if you've leaked out too much fluid.
In the picture, the cable is loose but shy of being slack.
