After reading the stab at our devotion to the 240 200

"I've never seen a Maxima that gets 30 mpg (going downhill coasting MAYBE)."

It got 28-29 on a couple of long trips when it was new. A combination of city and highway, with my lead foot, consistently results in 24 mpg. My 245, if driven the same way, dips below 20mpg. The Volvo actually weighs a couple hundred pounds less than the Maxima, and it is a 5-spd where the Maxima has a slushbox. Not to mention a smaller engine with two fewer cylinders. Go figure...

When the Maxima does break down, it is very expensive to fix (over a grand for the timing chain and a new water pump), and it is not anywhere near as DIY friendly as the Volvo. But the Volvo needs more "love." Tell you one thing, the Volvo will be on the road long after the Maxima has been parked in a wrecker's yard.
