I would check the intake manifold gasket. It's common for them to leak, and especially around #1 and #6 cylinders. Spray around the manifold gaskets with a water bottle, the engine will stumble if it is leaking.

Just because the solenoids are clicking doesn't mean they aren't working properly. I would replace the solenoid first if it's not too expensive. I guess you have to weigh the price options. You could always put the solenoid in the "new" trans. if it doesn't fix it.
