1985 245 alternator reroute question

so our 85 245 died on us on the highway a couple nights ago. thought it might have been the AMM but i looked at it this morning and the battery had really low voltage (only 6V) and saw a thin wire on the back of the alternator was basically falling apart.

i did a couple searches and i think this is the thin red wire. i see the thick red for charging, and another thin one that has a white connector plug on it, looks like it's going to the oil sender.

my problem is the searches say to splice the red wire at the 8-pin grey connector along the firewall. but the 245 has a black 6-pin connector, not an 8-pin. looking at our 83 244, i see the grey 8-pin so not sure why the 85 245 is different.

yellow black green
blue red white

i checked for continuity but 3 of the pins at the connector showed continuity to the spade connection at the alternator. not sure why that's happening.

do you guys think i should take a risk and splice into the red wire?

from my searches, a post by B.C.:

Usually the way to do it is to bypass the wires, putting in new ones from the connector to the destinations. The connector can be unhooked and opened up, so the old wire terminals can be clipped off and attached to the new wires.

I have the Volvo Service Manual Wiring Diagrams 240 1985 to refer to. It is part TP 30808/1 4500 7.85. Look at www.volvocars.com/lit and see if you can get one.

The terminals are in little pigeon holes in the connector, and the holes are numbered. Here is the layout:

#1..SB....Oil pressure sender (SB = black)
#2...Y....Water temperature gauge sender
#3...R....Alternator D+/61 (the thin red wire on the alt. back)
#4........Empty -- used on carb. models
#5..BL-Y..Starter solenoid (two thin wires there, note how they attach)
#6........Empty -- used on Diesel models
#7........Empty -- used on Turbo models
#8........Empty -- used on Diesel models
