Error code speed sensor 900 1996

I've got a '96 960 here throwing a code setting the check engine light. the code reader gives a P0500 Vehicle speed sensor malfunction reading.
Speedometer isn't acting strange and wires to the speed sensor look good. I can disconnect the battery and it will reset it and it will go off for until I drive a hundred feet or so, then the light trips again.

Any thoughts on this one?
