If I remember the electronics, the power stage sends a signal to the coil. Since your tach drops to zero, this sounds like an ignition issue. Next time it doesn't start, look for spark at the plug and work backwards. If no spark at the plug, but spark at the coil, then distributor. When it doesn't start, do you see the tach bouncing slightly?
