m46 slipping in 1st, 2nd (not clutch but overdrive issue) 700 1988

Hi Everyone,

I just installed a used (~250,000 mile) m46, aluminum case with P-type overdrive, in my 1993 940 turbo. The unit came from a 1988 740 turbo.

Problem - The transmission slips like the clutch is bad when I engage 1st or 2nd gear. This only happens occasionally, usually when the transmission is cold, like on a 15 deg F morning, and usually if I shift quickly or try to accelerate quickly. I have to really ease off the throttle to get the car to move - too much and it just slips. After driving for ~10 minutes it doesn't seem to happen.

What leads me to believe that the clutch is fine is that it is brand new, and it does not slip at all in 5th gear (OD engaged) at highway speeds.

Searching past threads leads me to believe that the problem may be related to the sprague clutch inside the OD unit, which transfers power in 1-4 gear, or to a possible blockage in the OD solenoid.

Further background - Tranny fluid is new and filled to the correct level (Amsoil supershift type F compatible synthetic), new Sachs clutch and PP, throwout and pilot bearings, rear main seal (no leaks), slave cylinder, clutch fork fully retracts when pedal is released.

I would sure appreciate any suggestions, especially from Duane (ODGuru)
