Hi there,
I've been considering Saab's (The post 1996 models) for the past few years.
so far their reliability ratings have been spotty at best (check carsurvey.org and edmunds).
The old 900 and esp. the 9000's were really THE car to have with bullit-proof reliability and comfort to match.
Unfortunatly, from the years of 97+ owners of both the 9-3 and 9-5's ( replacing the 900 and 9000 respectively) have been complaining of engine seizures (due to coking of oil in lines...horrible saab design, not a problem with maintenance), paint chipping, emblems falling off, poor electrical systems (even worse than on early 80's Volvo's with crumbling wiring harnesses), etc.
I'd really like to think Saab is improving, but so far I haven't seen any evidence of it. I can only hope that their quality can improve to what it was in the late 80's-early 90's.
With their poor resale value Saab seems like a fantastic used bargain. Too bad the value-to-performance ratio is very short-lived. Tho I'm almost certain that one of these years, Saab will build a very reliable car to match the performance and comfort that has come to be expected from Saab fans. Too bad that hasn't happend yet :(
